Only a handful of resorts offer genuine 12-month lift-served skiing on natural snow: Zermatt (Switzerland) and Mölltal (Austria) in Europe, plus Hintertux which closes only for very brief maintenance windows. Outside these, the Southern Hemisphere (Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia) takes over June–October, and Northern glaciers run summer ski seasons from June to early September. Indoor slopes (SnowWorld Landgraaf, Ski Dubai, Snø Oslo) run 365 days but on artificial snow.
Hintertux, Stubai, Sölden, Pitztal, Mölltal and Kaunertal (all Austria) plus Zermatt and Saas-Fee in Switzerland reopen between mid-September and early October — earlier than any other Alpine resorts. Sölden hosts the FIS World Cup opener every late October, which traditionally signals the start of the European ski season.
Yes, but the choice has narrowed. Zermatt, Hintertux, Cervinia, Mölltal, and Norway's Folgefonna/Galdhøpiggen run reliable June–July ski operations. Les 2 Alpes and Stelvio Pass (Italy) typically operate through late June into early September. Several historic summer-skiing venues — Tignes Grande Motte (closed since 2019) and Passo Stelvio's June operations — have been reduced because of glacier retreat. Always check the operator's calendar before booking summer trips.
In August your only Northern Hemisphere options are Zermatt, Hintertux, Mölltal, Cervinia, Stelvio Pass, Folgefonna, Galdhøpiggen, Timberline (Mt Hood, USA) and the Horstman Glacier at Whistler Blackcomb (Canada). For broader options head south: Chile (Portillo, Valle Nevado), Argentina (Las Leñas), Australia (Perisher) and New Zealand (Cardrona, Coronet Peak) all have full ski operations in August.
Summer glacier skiing is best in the morning (lifts typically run 07:00–13:00) before the surface gets too soft. Snow is firm, granular and predictable in the early hours — ideal for race-team training and freestyle camps, which is why these are the dominant summer customers. Afternoons get slushy and most glacier areas close lifts by 13:00–14:00.
