When Does Ski Season Start?
Ski season typically begins in November or December in the Northern Hemisphere, with high-altitude glaciers like Zermatt, Tignes, and Val Thorens often opening as early as October. At lower elevations and in Scandinavia, the season usually starts in December or January. The season runs until April or May, with spring skiing available at glacier resorts year-round.
In the Southern Hemisphere (Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, Australia), ski season runs from June to September — offering a popular option for Northern Hemisphere skiers looking for a summer escape.
Longest Ski Seasons in Europe
Glacier resorts dominate the list of longest European ski seasons. Zermatt (Switzerland) and Les Deux Alpes (France) are famous for near-year-round skiing. High-altitude Austrian resorts like Sölden and Hintertux also host glacier skiing well outside the main season. In Scandinavia, resorts like Riksgränsen (Sweden) specialize in late-season "midnight sun" skiing in May and June.
Ski Season in North America
North American resorts generally open in November and close in April. Resorts in Colorado (Vail, Breckenridge, Aspen) and Utah (Park City, Deer Valley, Alta) are known for excellent snow reliability and long seasons. In Canada, Whistler Blackcomb runs one of the continent's longest seasons, occasionally extending into June on Blackcomb Glacier.
