    When is the best week to ski in Europe?

    Mid-January (week commencing 12 January) and mid-March (week commencing 16 March) are the two best-value weeks of the season — both deliver 85–95% snow probability across most regions but cost roughly 60% of February half-term prices. The single 'best' compromise of snow, prices, and daylight is the last week of January, when conditions are at peak reliability and prices have dropped from the New Year peak but not yet climbed for half-term.

    How is snow probability calculated?

    Snow probability reflects the long-term (10-year) likelihood of skiable conditions at altitude for that region during the specified calendar week, weighted by historical snowfall data from regional weather agencies, snow-history.com, and resort operator reports. Higher altitudes (above 2,000m) have higher probabilities throughout the season; lower-altitude resorts depend more heavily on snow-making.

    How is the price index calculated?

    The price index uses mid-January as a baseline of 100. A value of 200 means accommodation and travel typically cost twice as much during that week as in mid-January for the same property. The index is a weighted average of accommodation, flight, and lift-pass demand patterns — restaurant and ski-hire prices don't fluctuate as dramatically.

    Is it worth skiing during half-term despite the cost?

    If you have school-age kids and can only travel during school holidays, yes — conditions are typically excellent across all major regions. But if your dates are flexible, the week before (week commencing 9 February) or the week after (week commencing 23 February) typically cost 30–50% less for near-identical conditions. The Easter holiday similarly skews prices upward; the week before or after Easter is dramatically cheaper.

    Why is Scandinavia consistently at high snow probability?

    Scandinavian resorts (Trysil, Åre, Levi, Ruka) sit at higher latitudes and have a more reliable cold-air pattern from November through April than Alpine equivalents at similar altitude. The snow base typically builds earlier (November) and lasts later (early May), with minimal need for snow-making. The trade-off is shorter daylight in December/January and colder temperatures.
