How we rank snowmaking
We combine two metrics: (1) coverage percentage — what share of a resort's piste network can be served by snow cannons; and (2) absolute cannon count — the raw number of installed cannons, which determines how quickly a resort can recover after a thaw. The tier classification weights both — 100% coverage with under 300 cannons is World-class only if the resort is small enough that 300 cannons cover it. Coverage data is taken from operator publications and updated for the 2026–27 season where new installations have been announced.

Italy's Dolomiti Superski (1,200 km of pistes with 98% snowmaking coverage and 4,900 snow cannons) is the global benchmark. At single-resort level, Austria's Ski Welt Wilder Kaiser is the largest 100%-covered ski area on earth (280 km). Other 100%-coverage standouts: Madonna di Campiglio (Italy), Schladming-Dachstein and Obergurgl-Hochgurgl (Austria), Val Gardena (Italy) and Levi (Finland).
Largely yes — modern snowmaking systems (which need −2°C wet-bulb temperatures or colder) can guarantee skiable conditions even at mid-altitude resorts whenever night-time temperatures cooperate. This is why low-altitude Austrian and Italian resorts (Ski Welt, Madonna, Saalbach) routinely outperform mid-altitude French resorts during marginal seasons. Snowmaking cannot, however, save resorts from sustained warm spells when night temperatures stay above freezing.
The big French resorts (Les 3 Vallées, Paradiski, Espace Killy) sit at higher base altitudes than their Austrian/Italian peers — most pistes are above 2,000 m and don't need snowmaking. Coverage focuses on lower-altitude connectors and village runs. The result: lower percentage coverage but similar overall snow reliability. Tignes-Val d'Isère's 50% coverage feels lower on paper but the resort's 2,100 m base means most terrain stays skiable on natural snow.
Snowmaking uses energy (typically 1 kWh per m³ of snow produced) and water (around 200 litres per m³). Major resorts now source most of their water from on-mountain reservoirs and increasingly run cannons on renewable electricity (notably the Italian Dolomites and Austrian SkiWelt). Per-skier environmental impact of snowmaking is significantly lower than air travel to the resort — typically under 5% of an average ski trip's total carbon footprint.
