Why capacity-per-km matters more than absolute capacity
Total uphill capacity flatters mega-resorts, but a 600 km piste network needs more lifts than a 200 km network just to function. The capacity-per-km metric exposes which resorts have genuinely invested in lift modernisation relative to terrain. Arlberg, Ski Welt, Saalbach and Levi all exceed 590 pph per km of piste — dramatically reducing lift-queue risk at peak hours. North American resorts generally rank lower on this metric (typically 175–220 pph/km) because of historical underinvestment in chairlift upgrades.
Reading the data carefully
Capacity figures are reported by resort operators and assume every lift runs at maximum design throughput. Real-world throughput is typically 70–85% of design capacity due to loading slowness, weather closures and maintenance. Use these numbers as a relative comparison, not an absolute crowd forecast.
