Frequently Asked Questions
Mid-January (12 Jan onward, after Epiphany) and mid-March are the two quietest in-season periods. Both offer empty pistes, the lowest in-season hotel rates, and excellent snow conditions. Late November and early December are even quieter but limited to high-altitude or glacier resorts because of marginal snow.
Christmas/New Year (22 Dec – 4 Jan), the UK + French Zone B half-term (16–22 Feb 2026), the French Zone C / Swedish Sportlov week (23 Feb – 1 Mar 2026), and Easter week (3–10 Apr 2026) are the four peak windows. Expect 30–60% premiums on hotels, lift queues at peak times, and lift-pass online-only availability at the busiest resorts.
Mid-February is when most European school half-term holidays cluster — UK, multiple French zones, German states, Dutch and Belgian school weeks, Italian Carnevale, and Swedish Sportlov all fall within a 3-week window. Mid-January has no major school holidays anywhere in Europe, which is why prices and crowds collapse.
France splits into three school-zone holiday rotations (A, B and C). Each zone gets two weeks for the winter half-term, staggered across February and early March. The peak ski week is when Zones B and C overlap with UK half-term (typically 16–22 Feb). Zone A weeks are slightly less crowded because they tend to fall a week earlier.
Saturday is the universal European holiday turnover day — most resort accommodation books Saturday-to-Saturday. This produces severe lift queues on Sunday mornings (everyone's first ski day) and quiet pistes on Saturdays. Flying mid-week (fly Tuesday, ski Wednesday–Tuesday) avoids both the airport and the resort crush.
