The world's biggest cross-border ski area
Portes du Soleil spans 600 km of pistes across 12 linked resorts and the France-Switzerland border. The Swiss side (Champéry, Morgins, Les Crosets, Champoussin, Torgon) sits at slightly lower altitude than the French side (Avoriaz 1,800 m, Morzine, Châtel) but delivers some of the most spectacular cross-border skiing in the Alps. The famous "Swiss Wall" (Chavanette) drops from Switzerland into France with a 50° pitch — one of the steepest commercial pistes in Europe.
The Schengen advantage
All current European cross-border ski areas sit within the Schengen zone — no passport check is required to cross France- Switzerland, France-Italy, Italy-Switzerland or Austria- Switzerland borders by ski lift or piste. Andorra (Grandvalira) is technically outside the EU but has open borders with France and Spain. UK skiers must carry passport for entry to Schengen countries but face no internal border check between resorts.
The Matterhorn crossing
Cervinia (Italy) to Zermatt (Switzerland) via the Plateau Rosa (3,899 m) is the world's highest cross-border ski crossing. Skiers can leave Italian breakfast in Breuil-Cervinia, cross into Switzerland via the Klein Matterhorn glacier, ski Zermatt all morning, and return for an Italian dinner — without ever taking a vehicle. The new Matterhorn Alpine Crossing tri-cable gondola (opened 2023) shaves 60 minutes off the historic crossing time.
