    Chamonix's Aiguille du Midi cable car gives access to 2,807 m of off-piste vertical via the Vallée Blanche descent (3,842 m to 1,035 m) — the largest single lift-served descent on the planet. For on-piste vertical, Aspen Snowmass (1,340 m), Jackson Hole (1,261 m), and Zermatt (2,263 m via the Cervinia link) are the marquee North American and European numbers. Revelstoke (Canada) has the largest single-resort lift-served piste vertical in North America at 1,713 m.

    Vertical drop is one of the cleanest indicators of skiing variety. A big vertical means long, varied descents — high alpine terrain at the top, treeline mid-mountain, and valley-floor village arrivals. It also means lift-served access to multiple snowpack and weather zones in a single day. Resorts with under 700 m of vertical (most Scandinavian resorts, smaller US east-coast resorts) deliver shorter, more repetitive descents.

    No. Top altitude tells you how high the highest lift goes (relevant for snow reliability), while vertical drop is the difference between top and base — relevant for descent length and variety. Cervinia has a higher top altitude (3,500 m) than Whistler (2,284 m), but Whistler has a bigger vertical drop (1,609 m vs 1,450 m).

    Southern Hemisphere resorts (Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia) sit at extremely high altitudes (Valle Nevado base 2,880 m) but the ski areas themselves are physically smaller than the major Alpine and North American resorts. Treeline in the Andes is around 2,000 m, which limits the lower extent of skiable terrain. The result is high top altitudes but modest vertical drops.

    Vertical drop = top lift-served altitude minus base lift-served altitude, in metres. For combined ski areas (Zermatt-Cervinia, Les 3 Vallées) we use the highest and lowest lift-served points across the linked network. Vallée Blanche-style off-piste descents are noted separately as 'off-piste vertical' because they require a guide and avalanche safety equipment.
