Sweden has approximately 230 commercial and community-operated ski areas, of which around 25 have international significance. This index covers the 20 commercial resorts that account for over 90% of Swedish visitor skier-days, from Branäs in Värmland (60.6°N) to Riksgränsen in Lapland (68.4°N).
Funäsfjällen is technically Sweden's largest combined ski area at 134 km of pistes across seven linked sub-areas (Tänndalen, Funäsdalen, Ramundberget, Tänndalsvallen, Bruksvallarna, Mittådalen, Ljusnedal) on one ticket. However, Åre is the largest single contiguous resort at 91 km of pistes and 89 individual pistes, with the country's only World Cup downhill course (Olympia, 6.5 km, 1,000m vertical) and Sweden's highest lift-served point (Åreskutan summit, 1,420m).
The aurora oval crosses Sweden roughly above 65°N. Hemavan-Tärnaby (65.8°N) sits at the southern edge of the high-probability zone. Dundret in Gällivare (67.1°N), Riksgränsen (68.4°N) and Björkliden (68.4°N) are all firmly within the aurora oval and have September-to-March viewing seasons. Riksgränsen and Björkliden are the only commercial ski resorts in the world where you can ski under the Northern Lights through evening illuminated slopes (December–early March).
Most Swedish Skistar resorts (Sälen, Vemdalen, Åre, Idre Fjäll) run early December through 26 April or 1 May, with Easter (Påsk) and the February school weeks (Sportlovet, weeks 8–11) as cultural peaks. Lapland resorts (Hemavan-Tärnaby, Dundret) extend into May. Riksgränsen deliberately opens for the season in mid-February and runs through Sweden's National Day on 6 June — Europe's longest single-resort spring season.
Yes — Riksgränsen (68.4°N) operates lift-served skiing through 6 June, with 24-hour midnight-sun daylight from approximately 22 May through 18 July. The 'midnight ski' tradition at Riksgränsen runs through the second week of June. Björkliden also offers spring midnight-sun ski touring from late May. Combined with the Riksgränsen heli-skiing programmes (NSF Heliskiing, Niehku Mountain Villa), it's the world's most northerly commercial spring ski experience.
