    FAQ — Ski resort sustainability

    It means the resort's scope-1 emissions (snow groomer diesel, lift station heating) plus scope-2 emissions (electricity) are either eliminated or offset by certified credits. Verified carbon-neutral lift operators in Europe 2025: Arosa Lenzerheide (Swiss), Riksgränsen (Sweden), Idre Fjäll (Sweden), Les Diablerets (Swiss, smaller resort). Many others (SkiWelt 2030, Lech, Saalbach, Megève 2035) have published target pathways but are not yet operationally neutral. Scope-3 emissions (visitor travel, food supply, building materials) are not yet covered by any major resort's neutrality claim — and scope 3 typically dominates total ski-trip carbon footprint by 5–10×. A genuinely 'carbon-neutral ski trip' requires guest action on travel (train over plane, EV over ICE) plus the resort operating credibly.

    It depends on the label. Credible labels with binding criteria and third-party audit: Flocon Vert (France, Mountain Riders NGO, 21 criteria, 3-year audit), ibex fairstay (Swiss, 26 criteria, 3-year audit), Nordic Swan Eco-label (Nordic Council of Ministers, building-by-building audit), EU Ecolabel (EU Commission, lift-by-lift), Alpine Pearls (network membership requiring annual mobility-statistics publication). Less robust: self-declared 'eco-resort' branding, single-criterion claims (e.g. '100% renewable electricity' which is the European baseline for almost all resorts), targets without measurement frameworks. Strongest practical signal: look for a resort that publishes an annual third-party-audited sustainability report (e.g. Laax Greenstyle report, Skistar Annual Report sustainability section).

    Sweden, followed by Switzerland. Sweden's 98% renewable+nuclear grid (12g CO₂/kWh) gives every lift a near-zero scope-2 baseline before any resort-specific programme. Riksgränsen and Idre Fjäll are operationally carbon-neutral. Average Swedish per-skier-day footprint at Åre is ~3.8kg CO₂e. Switzerland: 97% hydro+nuclear grid, top-performing Laax at 2.4kg/day, Arosa Lenzerheide at 3.1kg. France/Austria mid-pack at 4–5kg/day (snowmaking emissions higher due to grid mix and Snomax additives in some Austrian resorts). Italy and Spain higher at 5–7kg/day. North America significantly higher (7–12kg) due to fossil-heavy grid in Western US ski states. Critical caveat: these figures cover lift+snowmaking only — visitor travel (especially flights) typically adds 50–200kg per trip per person, dwarfing on-resort emissions.

    Scope-3 (your own travel) is the biggest lever. Take a train where possible: SBB+Eurostar can reach Verbier, Zermatt, Davos, St Moritz, Wengen from London in 9–12 hours; ÖBB Nightjet to Innsbruck/Salzburg for Austria; SNCF TGV to Bourg-Saint-Maurice (Tarentaise) or Saint-Gervais (Mont Blanc) — all roughly 80–95% lower carbon than flying. Stay 7 nights or longer (one trip's transport carbon amortises across more ski days). Choose certified resorts (Flocon Vert, ibex fairstay) — they materially measure and reduce on-mountain emissions. Use resort public-transport schemes (Saalbach Joker Card, Chamonix Carte d'Hôte). Avoid the highest-carbon per-skier formats (heliski, particularly long-distance flights to Canadian/Alaskan operators). On-mountain: rent rather than buy new gear, use biodegradable wax, eat at mountain restaurants serving local produce (>70% local food = certified Flocon Vert criterion).
