Spain has 32 commercial ski resorts in total: 14 in the Pyrenees (7 Aragón, 7 Catalan), 1 in Andalucía (Sierra Nevada), 9 in the Cantabrian/Picos range (Cantabria, Asturias, León, Galicia, La Rioja), plus 8 small local ski clubs in the Basque country, Madrid (Navacerrada/Valdesquí) and the Iberian system. The 23 commercially significant resorts shown in this index represent over 99% of Spanish skier-days.
Formigal (Aragón) is the largest Spanish ski resort by piste kilometres — 176 km across four interconnected valleys (Sextas, Sarrios, Anayet, Portalet). Baqueira-Beret (Val d'Aran, Catalonia) is the largest single-village resort at 167 km of piste and Spain's premium-priced destination. Sierra Nevada (Andalucía) is third at 110 km but has by far the highest top elevation (3,300m). Cerler (Aragón) and La Molina+Masella combined area (Alp 2500, 138 km) round out the top five.
Formigal offers the best premium-area value at EUR 0.31 per km of piste (EUR 55 pass / 176 km). For the cheapest absolute prices, Pajares (Asturias) at EUR 28 and Manzaneda (Galicia) at EUR 28 are the lowest commercial day passes in Spain. Baqueira-Beret is the only premium-priced Spanish resort (EUR 67) and roughly matches French/Andorran flagship pricing. The Aramón Tot regional pass at EUR 219/week covers six resorts and is the best multi-mountain Spanish value.
By most measures, yes — Baqueira-Beret has the largest single-village ski area (167 km piste), the highest-quality piste grooming and snowmaking infrastructure, the strongest restaurant and hotel ecosystem (more 4–5 star properties than any other Spanish resort), and the most snow-reliable terrain (north-facing bowls above 2,000m). Formigal beats it on raw piste size (interconnected four-valley network) and price (EUR 55 vs EUR 67). Sierra Nevada beats it on season length and altitude. Baqueira is the international choice; Formigal is the Spanish family-and-value choice.
Sierra Nevada is the only Spanish resort consistently operating full lift networks through April, usually closing in early May. Baqueira-Beret typically closes mid-April. Cerler, Boí Taüll and Formigal operate weekend lifts into early April depending on snow. Lower-altitude resorts (Catalan FGC, Cantabrian, Asturian) typically close late March. For Easter skiing in Spain, Sierra Nevada and Baqueira-Beret are the reliable choices.
