A snow-sure resort guarantees skiable terrain through a combination of: (1) high base elevation (cold air preserves snow); (2) significant annual snowfall (natural insurance); (3) glacier access (permanent snowfields); (4) extensive snowmaking (artificial backup); and (5) favourable aspect (north-facing slopes preserve snow longer). No single factor guarantees snow — the most reliable resorts score strongly across all five dimensions.

It depends on the metric. For Christmas-week reliability (December 20–January 5), European high-altitude resorts (Val Thorens, Tignes, Zermatt, Obergurgl, Sölden) win because of their 1,800m+ base elevations and glacier infrastructure. For total annual snowfall, North American resorts dominate — Alta (13.5m), Mt Baker (16.6m), and Revelstoke (10.5m) dwarf Alpine averages (Zermatt 5m, Val d'Isère 7.5m). For year-round skiing, Europe wins decisively with seven major glacier resorts; the USA has only Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood. For snowmaking coverage, Scandinavian resorts lead — Trysil (80%) and Levi (90%) guarantee opening dates regardless of weather.

In Europe: Val Thorens, Tignes, Val d'Isère, Les 2 Alpes, Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Sölden, Hintertux, Obergurgl, and Engelberg all maintain >95% historical reliability for December 20 opening. In North America: Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, and Loveland (Colorado) typically open mid-October; Alta and Snowbird (Utah) open by Thanksgiving; Whistler Blackcomb, Banff Sunshine, and Lake Louise open early November. For absolute certainty at Christmas: choose any resort in this index marked 'Christmas reliable' with a base elevation above 1,600m in Europe or above 2,400m in North America.

Glacier access is the single most powerful snow-reliability factor for late-season (May–October) skiing. European glacier resorts (Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Tignes, Les 2 Alpes, Sölden, Hintertux, Cervinia) offer guaranteed skiing from 2,800m+ snowfields even in poor snow years. For winter (November–April), glacier access matters less than base elevation and natural snowfall — Val Thorens has no glacier but is more reliable than many glacier resorts because of its 2,300m base. In North America, only Timberline Lodge (Mt Hood) offers true glacier skiing, making the US structurally dependent on natural snowfall and snowmaking for winter reliability.

Snowmaking is essential insurance but not absolute guarantee. It requires sustained sub-zero temperatures (ideally -5°C or colder) and low humidity. Scandinavian resorts (Trysil 80%, Åre 75%, Levi 90%) achieve near-perfect reliability through massive snowmaking + cold climates. European resorts like St. Moritz (50%) and Ischgl (45%) supplement moderate natural snow with extensive coverage. North American snowmaking is concentrated in Colorado (Vail 380 acres, Beaver Creek 605 acres) and the Northeast. The key limitation: snowmaking cannot create deep powder — it guarantees a skiable base, not a quality experience.
