Full-day pricing covers approximately 08:00–17:30 with one cooked lunch and afternoon snack, in November 2026 quoted rates. Holiday-week premiums (Christmas, Carnival, French February break) typically add 10–25%.
Ski-school starting age reflects the formal national ski-school programme: ESF Piou-Piou (3), Swiss Snowsports Snowli (3), Austrian BOBO Kids Club (3), Scuola Italiana Sci (4). Some resorts run earlier 'snow garden' play-on-snow modules for 2.5+ year-olds.

From 3 months in several large French Tarentaise resorts (Avoriaz, Tignes, Val Thorens, Valmorel) and Saas-Fee, Arosa and Verbier in Switzerland — these are PMI- or canton-licensed nurseries with qualified Fachfrau Betreuung Kind or puériculture staff. The youngest in this index is St Johann in Alpendorf's Hotel Oberforsthof Kinderhotel, which accepts babies from 7 days old as part of the residential childcare programme. Italian asili nido typically take from 6–12 months. Standalone municipal village Kindertagesstätten in Switzerland and Austria often have older minimum ages (12–24 months) because Swiss canton ratios for under-18-month-olds (1:3) make tourist placements economically marginal.
Crèche (halte-garderie/Kinderkrippe/asilo nido) = non-skiing licensed childcare, typically 08:00–17:30, for under-3s (sometimes up to 6). Ski school = on-snow ski progression for children 3+ in France/Switzerland/Austria and 4+ in Italy, typically 09:00–11:30 + 13:30–15:30. Many parents combine the two: morning ski-school lesson followed by afternoon crèche supervised play, lunch and rest. Larger resorts (Avoriaz, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Tignes, Saas-Fee, Arosa, Cavallino Bianco Ortisei) integrate the two in a single facility so families have one drop-off and pick-up point.
Austria — full-day childcare with lunch typically €40–€65 (vs €70–€110 in France, €60–€85 in Italy, €130–€180 in Switzerland). Critically, many Austrian Kinderhotels include the crèche in the half-board hotel rate at no extra charge, making the real all-in cost effectively zero for parents already booking these properties. The lowest-cost resort in this index is Filzmoos at €40/day. Switzerland is the most expensive due to high canton-mandated staff ratios and Swiss salary levels. France sits in the middle; Italy is comparable to Austria when booking inside the Family Hotels Trentino or Südtirol Familienhotels networks.
Materially yes — the absence of any vehicle traffic inside the village (deliveries restricted to defined hours, electric taxis only) removes the most common toddler-safety risk in ski destinations. Fully car-free European ski villages: Avoriaz (France), Saas-Fee, Wengen, Mürren and Zermatt (Switzerland), Bettmeralp and Riederalp (Switzerland), Stoos and Rigi (Switzerland). Partially car-free (cars to village edge only): Les Arcs 1950, Avoriaz 1800 zones, Sankt Anton old village. For families with under-5s this physical separation matters more than ski-school quality — it allows toddlers to walk independently in snow boots between hotel, restaurants and play areas.
