Ski-In Ski-Out FAQs
True ski-in/ski-out means you can put on your skis at the door of your accommodation, ski directly to a lift without walking, and ski back to the same door at the end of the day. Strict definitions require under 50 metres of carry. 'Ski-to-door' (50–100m) is close but not true ski-in/ski-out. Many properties market themselves as ski-in/ski-out when they actually require a 5-minute walk or shuttle — always verify exact distance to the nearest lift before booking.
SilverStar (Canada, BC) and Sun Peaks (Canada, BC) offer the cheapest true ski-in/ski-out in our index, with peak-season condos from €220–240 per night. In the USA, Winter Park Zephyr Mountain Lodge and Copper Mountain Center Village offer true ski-in/ski-out from €310–340 per night. European value leaders: La Plagne Bellecôte (France) from €240 and Avoriaz (France) from €280. For luxury on a budget: Big White (Canada) offers family-sized ski-in/ski-out condos at €290/night with full village amenities.
For families with kids under 12, ski-in/ski-out is almost always worth the 30–50% premium — no carrying skis and boots, no shuttle waits, the ability to return for lunch or naps, and significantly more skiing time per day. For adult groups without kids, the value depends on your skiing style: if you ski bell-to-bell, the premium is harder to justify. If you value leisurely mornings and slope-side apres, it pays for itself in convenience. The best-value compromise: 'ski-to-door' properties (50–100m) at 15–25% premium over walk-to-lift.
The USA leads on service amenities: heated walkways, ski valets, ground-floor equipment rooms, and concierge-level service are standard at Vail, Beaver Creek and Deer Valley. Canada wins on value and family design: Big White and Sun Peaks offer true ski-in/ski-out at 40–60% lower cost than equivalent US properties. France pioneered the purpose-built ski-in/ski-out model with the highest concentration of true doorstep skiing (Avoriaz, Val Thorens, La Plagne). Switzerland offers the most atmospheric ski-in/ski-out in car-free villages (Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Mürren).
Yes — but not at marquee resorts. True ski-in/ski-out at Vail or Beaver Creek runs $800–2,000/night. For budget true ski-in/ski-out: look at Copper Mountain Center Village (Colorado, ~$350/night), Winter Park Zephyr (~$310), SilverStar (BC, ~$220), Sun Peaks (BC, ~$240), or La Plagne (France, ~€240). The key is choosing secondary resorts where the entire village is ski-in/ski-out by design, not luxury add-on.
