    How often does each major ski resort actually deliver fresh powder? This ranking uses 30-year averages (1995–2024) of days with 15 cm or more of fresh snowfall at mid-mountain elevation — the threshold serious freeride skiers care about.

    Methodology

    We aggregated 30 winter seasons (1994/95 through 2023/24) of mid-mountain snowfall data per resort from national reanalysis datasets: Météo-France SAFRAN (French Alps and Pyrenees), MeteoSwiss IMIS / SLF (Switzerland), ZAMG/GeoSphere (Austria), NRCS SNOTEL (US Rockies and Cascades), Environment Canada (BC), and JMA AMeDAS (Japan). A 'powder day' is any 24-hour period with 15 cm or more of new snow logged at 07:00 local time at the resort's mid-mountain weather station.

    Numbers reflect long-term averages — individual seasons vary by ±35%. Resorts with multiple weather stations use the mid-mountain north-facing station. Probability is calculated as (powder days ÷ operating-season days × 100). Powder quality is not ranked here — see country-specific guides for snow-density discussion.

    A powder day is defined as a 24-hour period delivering 15 cm or more of fresh snowfall at the resort's mid-mountain elevation, measured at 07:00 local time. This is the threshold most freeride skiers and ski guides use professionally. A separate column tracks 10 cm+ 'storm days' — a softer measure that captures top-up days that still ski as powder on north aspects. Both are 30-year averages (1995–2024) from national reanalysis datasets.

    Mt Baker (Washington, USA) sits in the direct path of Pacific Northwest moisture, with relatively low elevation (1,493 m peak) allowing precipitation to fall as snow when the freezing level is high. It holds the world annual snowfall record (28.96 m in 1998/99). The trade-off is wet, heavy powder ('Cascade concrete') — high probability of fresh snow but lower quality than the dry interior champagne snow of Niseko, Alta or Asahidake.

    Three regions consistently top the dry-snow rankings: Hokkaido Japan (Niseko, Furano, Asahidake — 60–80 kg/m³ snow density due to the Siberian airmass crossing the Sea of Japan), Utah Cottonwoods (Alta, Snowbird — Great Salt Lake effect produces 70–90 kg/m³ snow), and the Wyoming–Montana corridor (Jackson Hole, Bridger Bowl — 80–100 kg/m³). European powder averages 110–140 kg/m³ in the western Alps, 90–110 kg/m³ in the Arlberg, and 70–90 kg/m³ in Scandinavia in January.

    Snowfall ranking measures total volume; powder probability measures frequency. A resort can have moderate total snowfall but very high powder-day frequency if storms cycle through often (e.g. Niseko: 14 m total, but distributed across 100 storm days). Conversely, big-snowfall resorts with infrequent very large storms have lower probability (e.g. Whistler: 11.6 m total but only 70 storm days, with several 1m+ events). For freeride trip planning, probability is more useful than total volume.

    Hokkaido: peak frequency mid-December through mid-February (90% of powder days). Utah Cottonwoods: January–March, with February the single best month. Alps (Arlberg, Engelberg, Chamonix): January–February for Nordstau (north-side) storms, March for warm Atlantic systems. Jackson Hole: January–March, peak February. Scandinavia: late January–March. La Grave / Chamonix off-piste: best 5–14 days after major storms when wind has settled snow on north aspects.
