Nevados de Chillán on Volcán Chillán (Chile, 36.9°S) records the deepest snowpack in South America with an average of 12 m of annual snowfall — driven by Pacific storm exposure on the windward Andean slope and the cold-air pool over the volcanic basin. Corralco on Volcán Lonquimay (10 m), and the Chilean Tres Valles plus Portillo (8 m) follow. The Argentine side of the Andes receives roughly half the snowfall of the Chilean side at equivalent latitudes due to the rain-shadow effect.
Cerro Castor in Tierra del Fuego (Ushuaia, 54.8°S) has the longest commercial ski season in South America — typically mid-June through mid-November (5 months). The cold-air pool from the Antarctic Convergence keeps the snowpack in winter condition far later than any other commercial resort. Valle Nevado and Portillo run the second-longest seasons (mid-June through mid-October). The Argentine Lakes District resorts (Catedral, Chapelco) and the Chilean volcanic resorts run mid-June through early October.
Las Leñas in Mendoza (Argentina, 35.2°S) is the largest single-mountain freeride in South America with a 1,190 m vertical drop accessed by the iconic Marte chairlift. The off-piste terrain accessible from the Marte ridge is comparable in scale to Verbier's Mont-Fort or Chamonix's Aiguille du Midi. Portillo offers more concentrated steep ridge skiing on Roca Jack but with shorter individual descents. The Tres Valles cluster (Valle Nevado + La Parva + El Colorado, ~120 km combined pistes) is the largest connected resort area in South America.
Cerro Castor (Ushuaia, 54.8°S) is the world's southernmost commercial ski resort. The 28 km of pistes are predominantly intermediate cruising spread over a 770 m vertical drop, with cold-stable snow conditions through mid-November (the latest of any South American resort). The compelling reason to visit isn't the ski terrain itself but the combination: skiing at the end of the world, the Beagle Channel views from the upper lifts, Tierra del Fuego National Park's coastal sub-Antarctic forests, and Ushuaia city as the world's southernmost ski town.
