    Onsen & thermal spa skiing FAQ

    Onsen is the Japanese legal designation: natural geothermal water at 25°C+ at source, containing at least one of 19 specified mineral compounds, served in segregated (typically textile-free) single-sex bathhouses. European 'thermal spas' use natural mineral or thermal water but follow Continental textile-allowed pool etiquette with textile-free sauna zones. 'Moor baths' (Germany, Czechia) use heated peat-moor rather than water. 'Saunalands' may use municipal water heated by the facility — distinguished from thermal spas by the source-water test. All four offer wellness ski potential but the cultural experience differs sharply.

    Several resorts score zero kilometres because the spa is integrated into the resort village or the hotel itself: Nozawa Onsen, Zao Onsen, Manza Onsen and Niseko Hilton Village (Japan); Leukerbad, Vals, Scuol, Andermatt The Chedi (Switzerland); Bad Hofgastein, Bad Kleinkirchheim (Austria); Brides-les-Bains, Saint-Gervais (France); Mariborsko Pohorje (Slovenia). For 'walk-from-the-lift-in-ski-boots' integration the standouts are Bad Kleinkirchheim, Leukerbad and Andermatt's The Chedi.

    Yes, almost universally. Continental European (German, Austrian, Swiss, Slovenian, Czech) sauna etiquette is textile-free without exception in the dedicated Saunalandschaft zone. Swimwear in a sauna is a hygiene violation and you will be asked to remove it. The thermal pools are textile-allowed (swimwear required). Bring your own large bath sheet (some facilities rent), flip-flops, and a separate dry sauna towel. Japanese onsen are textile-free throughout (single-sex bathing). Andorra's Caldea is the unusual case: textile-free zones are clearly marked and optional rather than mandatory in some areas — read the entry maps.

    Pre-book: 7132 Therme Vals (limited to 140 people), Forbes 5-star spa treatments anywhere (Bad Ragaz, The Chedi, Riffelalp), Friday/Saturday peak slots at Tauern Spa or Aqua Dome, and Caldea Inúu adult-only zones (sells out in Spanish school holidays). Walk-in fine: most municipal Thermen (Therme Meran, Therme Oberstdorf, Burgerbad Leukerbad), Japanese sotoyu (Nozawa, Zao, Kusatsu — they are public bathhouses with token-style entry), and Slovenian Termē. Rule of thumb: any spa that does not appear on the resort's official daily activity board needs pre-booking; anything posted with hourly capacity is walk-in.
