Ruka in Finland operates Europe's largest single cross-country trail network at around 500 km, with 47 km lit for night skiing. Sjusjøen and Lillehammer (Norway) and Ylläs (Finland) all exceed 300 km. In North America, Royal Gorge near Lake Tahoe has the largest trail system at 200 km.
Classic tracks have two parallel grooves the width of standard XC skis — you stride and glide forward in the tracks. Skating tracks are a wide groomed corduroy lane where you push off diagonally like an ice-skater. Most modern Nordic resorts groom both side-by-side on the same trails. Classic is easier to learn; skating is faster and more athletic.
The Vuokatti Ski Tunnel in Finland operates a 1.2 km indoor cross-country tunnel year-round (used for national team summer training). Outdoors, summer XC skiing is possible at Norway's Folgefonn and Galdhøpiggen glaciers (limited terrain), and on the Pitztal and Stubai glaciers in Austria. The Davos and Lillehammer biathlon training centres also run summer roller-ski tracks.
