    Methodology

    Data is compiled from published 2026/27 resort lift schedules, piste maps marking floodlit terrain, and operator-confirmed evening pricing. Only resorts with scheduled, weekly, public floodlit operations are included — event-only floodlights (one-off FIS races, charity nights, New Year's Eve specials) are excluded. "Lit kilometres" sums the marked lit-piste lengths from each resort's official piste map. "Lit vertical" measures top-of-lit-lift to bottom-of-lit-piste vertical drop, using the longest single floodlit run at each venue.

    Pricing reflects walk-up evening tickets at lift kiosks for adult skiers, in EUR equivalent on 1 November 2025. CHF, GBP, NOK, SEK and JPY converted at then-current rates. Where evening skiing is included automatically with a same-day full-area pass purchase, the "included" column is checked.

    Levi in Finnish Lapland — 18km of lit pistes across 27 runs, lit 10 hours per day (10:00–20:00) from late November to mid-April. This is a function of polar latitude: at 67°N, late December has only 4 hours of usable daylight, so the floodlights are an operational necessity rather than an after-work amenity. Ruka (14km) and Ylläs (12.5km) come second and third — also Finnish. The largest Alpine lit terrain by comparison is Flumserberg (Switzerland) at 4.5km, less than a third of Levi's footprint. Finnish night skiing is the only mass-market context where floodlit terrain matches daytime terrain in scale.

    Three factors: (1) Lower lift-operator wages — Slovak, Polish and Czech lift workers earn ~30% of Swiss equivalents, dropping the marginal cost of running an evening shift. (2) Municipal subsidies — Polish ski resorts (e.g., Bialka Tatrzanska) and French Massif resorts (La Bresse, Mont-Dore) receive regional tourism subsidies for evening operations as a community service. (3) Lower energy cost — French nuclear baseload is among Europe's cheapest electricity. Result: Les Karellis (€18) and La Bresse (€22) in France, Białka Tatrzańska (€15) in Poland, and Tatranská Lomnica (€14) in Slovakia offer the cheapest evening tickets in Europe.

    Yes, in two predictable ways. (1) Hardness: most resorts groom in late afternoon between 16:00 and 18:00, meaning evening skiers ride a freshly groomed but re-freezing surface — firmer than morning, faster carve edge engagement, less forgiving for beginners. (2) Visibility: floodlights illuminate the snow surface but not the air column, so you can see grooming lines clearly but cannot easily judge depth of new snow or terrain undulations as well as in daylight. Both factors favour carving intermediates and advanced skiers over beginners, which is why Austrian/Italian/Swiss floodlit terrain skews toward red/black gradients (where carving suits) rather than blue (where beginners need maximum visibility).

    Finnish 'night-included' day passes win on per-hour cost. Levi sells a single ticket valid 10:00–20:00 for €68 — 10 hours of usable skiing including evening, working out €6.80/hour. By contrast, Bormio's Stelvio floodlit evening (€38 for 2.5h) is €15.20/hour. Among single-evening tickets, Les Karellis (€18 for 3.5h, €5.14/hour), La Bresse (€22 for 4h, €5.50/hour) and Folgaria (€22 for 2.5h, €8.80/hour) are the cheapest. Annaberg (Austria, €22 for 4h, €5.50/hour) is the Austrian value pick. Evening skiing is rarely 'cheap' on a per-hour basis versus a full day ticket — it's a leisure extension product, not a value play.
