FAQ — Heliski operators and formats
France: banned since 1985 — no summit drops on French territory (only 'hélidépose' valley pickups allowed). Switzerland: legal at 42 federally-licensed mountain drop zones, IFMGA guide-led only, most Valais zones closed Nov–mid-March for wildlife. Italy: legal at 25+ drop zones (Aosta, Piedmont, South Tyrol), mountain-guide-led, Dec–May. Austria: legal but limited (~10 drop zones in Vorarlberg/Carinthia/Tyrol), guide-led. Slovenia/Germany: effectively banned. Sweden/Norway/Iceland: legal, less regulated, no federal drop-zone licensing. Canada: legal under provincial Crown land tenure system, operators hold exclusive multi-thousand km² tenures.
Lodge week (Canada, Iceland, Sweden's Niehku): 7-day all-inclusive at €10,000–€18,000 — best vertical-per-dollar (typically 30,500m guarantee), zero logistical overhead, fixed group of 11/4 stays together all week. Best for: enthusiast skiers wanting maximum heliski volume, groups of friends/companies booking exclusive use. Day drops (Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Norway): à la carte single-day packages €320–€620 per skier, bought during a resort ski trip. Best for: skiers already at an Alpine resort wanting 1–3 iconic heli days as bucket-list add-ons, mixed-group trips where only some want heliski.
Minimum: confident off-piste skier in any snow condition (powder, wind-crust, refrozen, spring corn), comfortable on Black/Double-Black piste runs, competent rope-team glacier travel (for Swiss/Italian glacier drops). No specific freeride competition experience needed — guides match terrain to group ability. CMH, Mike Wiegele and Niehku run dedicated 'first-timer' weeks for strong off-piste skiers who've never heliskied. Last Frontier, Bella Coola, Arctic Heli Skiing require established off-piste fitness and steep-skiing comfort. All operators require avalanche transceiver/probe/shovel use (taught morning of day 1 if not familiar) and mandatory avalanche airbag rental (€20–€40/day) at most BC operators.
Budget tier (TLH Whistler 7-day): CAD 11,000 / €7,200 lodge + €2,000 flights + €600 vertical overage = ~€10,000 total per skier. Premium tier (CMH/Mike Wiegele): CAD 15,000 / €10,000 lodge + €2,500 flights + €1,200 vertical overage + €600 gratuities + €400 powder ski rental = ~€14,500 total. Ultra-premium (Bella Coola, Last Frontier private week): €18,000 lodge + €2,500 flights + extras = €22,000–€28,000. European Alps single-day heli: €450–€780 per skier including guide. Three-day Swiss/Italian heli mini-week (Verbier or Courmayeur): €1,800–€3,200 per skier, can layer onto a normal resort ski week.
