    Frequently Asked Questions

Switzerland is the global gold standard. More than 30 ski resorts are reachable directly by train, several with stations inside car-free villages (Zermatt, Wengen, Mürren). The Swiss Travel Pass covers all SBB, MGB, RhB and BLM rail plus PostBus transfers, and the entire network is timetabled to integer-minute connections. Austria is second thanks to the ÖBB Nightjet network, which links Hamburg, Amsterdam and Brussels to Tyrol overnight.

Yes — the Eurostar Snow Train (Saturdays, December to early April) runs London St Pancras → Moûtiers → Bourg-Saint-Maurice direct. TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon serves the same stations year-round in 4h 20m–4h 30m. From Bourg, the Arc-en-Ciel funicular runs straight from the station platform to Arc 1600. From Moûtiers, Altibus shuttles serve the entire Trois Vallées (Méribel, Courchevel, Val Thorens) in 30–60 minutes.

ÖBB Nightjet serves St. Anton, Kitzbühel, Schladming, Bad Gastein, Jenbach (for Mayrhofen) and Innsbruck from Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Brussels and Munich. SNCF Intercités de Nuit runs Paris-Austerlitz → Briançon overnight for Serre Chevalier and Montgenèvre. Snälltåget operates a weekly Hamburg–Åre sleeper from December to April. NSB sleeper from Oslo to Bergen calls at Geilo, Voss and Finse.

Yes. Zermatt, Wengen, Mürren, Saas-Fee, Riederalp and Bettmeralp (Switzerland), Werfenweng (Austria), Avoriaz (France) and Stoos (Switzerland) all ban private combustion vehicles. You park at a valley station and travel the last leg by cogwheel, cable car, electric taxi or sled. The carbon footprint of a rail-and-car-free ski trip from London is roughly 10× lower than the equivalent flying-plus-drive itinerary.

Interrail covers all base fares on SBB, ÖBB, SNCF (with reservation supplement on TGV), Trenitalia, Deutsche Bahn, NSB and SJ. Reservations are mandatory and limited on TGV Lyria, Nightjet sleepers, the Eurostar Snow Train and Glacier Express — book six months ahead for ski-season departures. Rack railways (Jungfraubahn, MGB) and cable cars are not covered and charge separately.
