Methodology & FAQ
Innsbruck (INN) and Chambéry (CMF) have the shortest average transfers in the Alps — most marquee resorts are 60–110 minutes by car. Grenoble (GNB) is the fastest for the Oisans and Tarentaise valleys (Alpe d'Huez 75 minutes, Val Thorens 130 minutes). For the Tirol generally, Innsbruck beats every alternative by 30–60 minutes per direction.
Yes, despite the longer transfer to the Tarentaise resorts (3.5 hours to Val Thorens or Val d'Isère). Geneva has by far the cheapest flights from the UK, Ireland, and Northern Europe; flight savings often outweigh the longer transfer. For Chamonix, Morzine, Megève, and Avoriaz it is the obvious airport (75–105 minute transfers). For the deep Tarentaise, also consider Lyon, Grenoble, and Chambéry.
Shared shuttle from Geneva to Val Thorens runs €110–€160 per person each way (3.5 hours). Private transfers run €450–€700 each way for up to 6 people. Train (TGV) from Geneva to Bourg-Saint-Maurice plus bus to the resort runs €60–€100 per person. Public bus services are cheapest at €30–€50 per person but slowest. Hiring a car at Geneva for a week runs €250–€450 plus winter tyres surcharge and motorway tolls.
Driving times are typical-traffic estimates from Google Maps for a Saturday morning departure in mid-January (the most common arrival day). Distances are road kilometres, not straight-line. Times can extend 30–90 minutes on changeover Saturdays when transfer roads back up; allow extra time on peak weekends. For winter driving, you will need snow chains or winter tyres in all listed countries.
Yes, especially for the French Alps. Eurostar Snow Train runs London–Bourg-Saint-Maurice directly Saturday in winter, with onward bus connections to Tignes, Val d'Isère, Les Arcs, and La Plagne. TGV runs Paris and Lyon to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Moûtiers, and Chambéry. Swiss Railways' direct connections from Zurich and Geneva to St Moritz, Davos, Verbier, and Zermatt are world-class. Train tends to be more expensive than budget flights but dramatically lower-carbon.
