Japow refers to Japanese powder snow—among the lightest and driest in the world. Hokkaido resorts like Niseko receive 14-18 meters of annual snowfall, creating feather-light powder conditions that attract skiers globally. The unique weather patterns from the Sea of Japan produce exceptionally low-density snow.
December to March for powder. January and February typically have the most consistent and deepest snowfall, especially in Hokkaido. Honshu resorts (Hakuba, Nozawa) peak in January-February. Spring skiing extends to April at higher elevations.
Japan skiing offers surprising value compared to its reputation. Lift passes at most resorts cost €40-65/day—cheaper than the Alps. Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses to luxury ski-in-ski-out hotels. Niseko is the exception, now rivaling Alpine prices.
Hakuba Valley offers excellent beginner terrain with English-speaking instructors and diverse slopes. Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen also have gentle learning areas. Avoid Niseko's tree skiing as a beginner—the deep powder can be challenging.
