    Frequently Asked Questions

The core season runs from mid-June to early October across all destinations. Australia and Cardrona (NZ) open earliest, often by early June. New Zealand's Tūroa (Mt Ruapehu) is the longest reliable late-season resort, running into early November. Chile and Argentina close in early-to-mid October at lower-altitude resorts; Tierra del Fuego's Cerro Castor reliably runs into late October.

Nevados de Chillán in central Chile records the deepest natural snowpack at ~12 metres annually thanks to its Pacific-facing volcanic exposure. Corralco (Chile, 10 m), Antillanca (Chile, 9 m) and Portillo/Valle Nevado (Chile, 8 m) follow. Argentina's Las Leñas and Cerro Castor (6–7 m) are the snowiest Argentine resorts. Australian resorts receive only 1.5–2.5 m and rely heavily on snowmaking.

Significantly cheaper at the lift-pass level — Argentine resorts run USD 35–85/day, Chilean resorts USD 60–110/day. Australia and New Zealand both run USD 100–140/day equivalent at the major resorts. The flip side: South American international flights from Europe/North America are longer and often pricier than Australasian flights from Asia/North America. Domestic Argentine lodging is extremely cheap; Chile and NZ mid-range; Australia expensive.

Only experienced skiers comfortable with rope tows, no groomers, and self-arranged transport (often 4WD-required access roads) should consider Craigieburn, Temple Basin, Broken River, Mt Olympus or Mt Cheeseman. The trade-off is sublime above-treeline terrain at NZ$60–80 day passes, often with overnight hut accommodation included. For first-time NZ visitors, stick to Cardrona, Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Treble Cone.
