    Chacaltaya in Bolivia historically reached 5,421 m but no longer operates. Among active resorts, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (China) and Gulmarg (India) top 3,900 m, followed by Breckenridge (USA) at 3,962 m peak and Val Thorens (France), Europe's highest at 3,230 m.

    Higher resorts get colder, dryer snow and longer reliable seasons. Most resorts above 2,500 m base elevation can guarantee snow from December to late April even in poor seasons.

    Val Thorens in France has Europe's highest village (2,300 m) and peak (3,230 m). Zermatt's glacier reaches 3,883 m and offers year-round skiing.

    Below 3,000 m it is uncommon. Above that, allow a day to acclimatise, hydrate well and avoid heavy alcohol on the first night — especially in Andean and US Rockies resorts above 3,500 m.
